Vietnam Cruise Tourism
A few years ago, Viet Nam has developed deep-water sea port system (50k-200k GRT) that enable big cruise ship to berth. Among the big ports is in Ha Long port in Quang Ninh, Chan May port in Hue, Tien Sa port in Da Nang and Nha Trang port in Khanh Hoa.
Infrastructure for sea ports remains a main concern of Viet Nam’s cruise tourism. Other than in Ha Long International Cruise Port, cruises still have to berth at ports designed for cargo and container vessels especially ports in the South of Viet Nam. Viet Nam currently still relies on cargo terminals to provide cruise berth like Ho Chi Minh and Vung Tau ports. Finding the suitable positions for dedicated berths is not always easy due to tight berth slots to be share with commercial shipping needs. Moreover, many ports prefer to take in cargo vessels because the charges much higher than passenger ships.
In May 2019, US cruise lines Royal Caribbean has started to get a construction permit from Viet Nam Government to build an International Cruise Port in Vung Tau from 2020. We all hope this potential project could be approved soon in the future. As it will open a bigger opportunity for Viet Nam Cruise Tourism upcoming developing years.
The economy benefits from cruise ships may not outweigh cargo vessels, but the number of cruise tourist can bring in higher income, and improve the living standard of the locals and help to promote the image of the country and its people.
